Like many Pacific nations, the Cook Islands is heavily affected by the impacts of climate change. Recognising the threat it faces, the Cook Islands is working to increase its legal preparedness for disaster and the Cook Islands Red Cross is supporting government in this endeavour. Specifically, Cook Islands Red Cross is working with government authorities to review the National Disaster Risk Management Plan.

IFRC Disaster Law and Cook Islands Red Cross have published significant research on disaster law in the Cook Islands, including reports focused on disaster risk reduction and international disaster response. Most recently, Cook Islands was one of 16 countries included in a study of legal preparedness for regional and international disaster assistance in the Pacific.
