IDRL will soon be taught as part of the Disaster Management curriculum for an “Executive Diploma in Humanitarian Affairs” course offered jointly by the Malaysian Red Crescent Institute and Harun M. Hashim Law Centre of the International Islamic University of Malaysia (IIUM).

“We are extremely happy about the collaboration between IFRC and MRC in formulating the content of the syllabus for the subject of IDRL and Disaster Management,” said Hisham Harun Hashim, Deputy National Chairman of the MRC. “We hope that this effort of ours shall promote the subject to a wider scope of audience including those from the academic world so as to increase the amount of research and studies on the subject.”

The Executive Diploma in Humanitarian Affairs is designed to provide a framework of law and basic principles applicable to humanitarian relief work in times of natural disasters and armed conflict. It is targeted at representatives of the military, academia and civil society organisations.

The Executive Diploma will consist of 10 subjects and extend over a period of 2 years. During the second semester, students will be introduced to IDRL, both in terms of existing legal frameworks and the practical regulatory problems that most often arise in international disaster response operations.

The Executive Diploma course will begin its first session in early 2011.
