In this interview, four high-level members of Indonesia’s newly formed “National Disaster Management Body” (BNPB) described their thinking in hosting an IDRL workshop in Jakarta last July.

Over the past week we have witnessed the devastating effects that disasters can have in the Pacific, as Cyclone Evan has wreaked havoc across Fiji and Samoa, catching many unfortunate people in its path. 

On 7-8 August 2012, the Cook Islands Red Cross Society organized a “Cook Islands Consultation Workshop on Legal Preparedness for International Disaster Response,” a dynamic forum that generated great interest and discussion around a draft IDRL study report. 

The emergency management authorities in the Cook Islands, together with the Cook Islands Red Cross Society and the IFRC Pacific Office, have taken initial steps towards increasing the Islands’ legal preparedness for international disaster assistance

In December 2010 the IDRL Programme held a half-day workshop for senior leaders and selected staff from the China Red Cross Society. The aim of the workshop was for national society staff to gain a better understanding of IDRL, and to discuss the need for IDRL development in China.

That natural disasters can dramatically impact even the most powerful nations was again confirmed on May 12, 2008, when a massive earthquake struck Sichuan Province in China, killing more than 80,000 and displacing millions.
