In April, the city of Padang, West Sumatra played host to over 100 representatives from the Indonesian government, the military, the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, humanitarian organizations and the international donor community, who came together to participate in the ‘International Table Top Exercise: Mentawai Megathrust Direx 2013.’

In May of this year, representatives of the Indonesia Red Cross Society (also known as Palang Merah Indonesia or PMI) joined Indonesian customs and disaster management officials in participating in a regional “Seminar on the Role of Customs in Natural Disaster Relief” organized by the World Customs Organisation, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Bangkok.

The Indonesian Disaster Management Authority (also known as Badan Nasional Penanggulangan Bencana, or BNPB), together with UN OCHA, recently conducted a simulation exercise on the receipt of international humanitarian assistance during emergency response operations.

On 13 – 14 February 2009, IDRL Asia Pacific Programme Officer Aishah Amin was in Jakarta to introduce the IDRL Guidelines at the Co-ordination Forum for Aceh and Nias (CFAN).

In September 2014, the Supreme Court of India took up the case of Vasundhara Pathak Masoodi vs. Union of India related to floods that have recently taken place in the Kashmir Valley.

February was an exciting month in Timor Leste, as Disaster Law Programme developments kicked off for the first time.

In May, a landmark disaster law workshop in the Cook Islands gathered representatives of the Cook Islands Red Cross Society (CIRCS), diplomatic missions and relevant government officials to finalise disaster related Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). 

Over the past week we have witnessed the devastating effects that disasters can have in the Pacific, as Cyclone Evan has wreaked havoc across Fiji and Samoa, catching many unfortunate people in its path. 

On 7-8 August 2012, the Cook Islands Red Cross Society organized a “Cook Islands Consultation Workshop on Legal Preparedness for International Disaster Response,” a dynamic forum that generated great interest and discussion around a draft IDRL study report.
