In the aftermath of Hurricane Maria, which devastated Dominica in 2017, IFRC Disaster Law engaged with the government in a policy assessment that benchmarked the response against the International Disaster Response Law (IDRL) Guidelines. The results of this policy assessment were then published in 2022.
In 2019, Dominica Red Cross Society was invited by the government to comment on the draft Comprehensive Disaster Management Bill. Currently, the Bill is still before cabinet awaiting approval, before being brought to parliament.
In 2025, the IFRC supported the Dominica Red Cross Society to develop a case study on integrating first aid education in laws and policies within the framework of the READY 360 project. This case study highlighted key opportunities where laws and policies could be strengthened on first aid, as well as opportunities to highlight the mandate of the National Society in first aid education. In November 2025, consultations were held with the Ministry of Health on the findings and recommendations of the case study as well as opportunities for further synergy with the Red Cross.
