On December 7, the Tajik parliament adopted an amendment to the Customs Code exempting humanitarian aid from customs duties and reducing documentation requirements for aid shipments.
According to Abdurahim Umarzod, Tajik Customs Service Spokesperson, the new rules will apply to humanitarian aid donated to state agencies or charitable organizations. He also noted that medicines, medical and pharmaceutical equipment and medical instruments would now also be exempted from customs duties.
This is the second piece of legislation related to international humanitarian aid adopted by the Parliament of Tajikistan this year. Previously, a new Tax Code freed international humanitarian aid imported to respond to disasters and emergencies and provided to state agencies or charitable organizations from value-added tax (VAT).
