Bangladesh is one of the world's most disaster-prone countries. With a population of more than 157 million, it is also one of the most densely populated countries in the world.

On 24 April and in the weeks that followed, the collapse of the Rana Plaza factory building in Bangladesh generated global headlines as survivors and bodies were pulled from the rubble where the building once stood in Savar, a sub-district outside the capital city of Dhaka.

On 30 January 2014, a draft “Superior Decree for the Facilitation of International Humanitarian Operations” was presented as part of the Meeting for the Coordination and Information of the Reactive Management organized by the National Institute of Civil Defence of Peru (INDECI).

This September, Peru initiated a process to further develop its legal framework for international disaster assistance.

On October 19th, the IFRC, Peruvian Red Cross and Peruvian government convened the first workshop of the working group for the Peru IDRL technical assistance project in Lima.

This year, the United Nations Disaster Assessment and Coordination (UNDAC) Team has invited the IFRC to provide legal expertise, particularly on IDRL, on several of its “preparedness missions”

On 4 April  2013, more than 50 representatives of several public institutions and governmental authorities gathered to discuss Paraguay’s legal preparedness for disasters. The workshop took place in conjunction with the drafting of the new emergency regulation to Law 2615, which established the National Emergency Secretariat, and the adoption of a new national policy on risks management.

On 29 January 2013, representatives from thirty local and international organisations gathered in Kingston, Jamaica to review the findings of a study on Jamaica’s legal preparedness to facilitate international relief following a major disaster.
