On the occasion of the 2012 Inter-American Conference of the Red Cross, top leaders of the IFRC and President Michel-Joseph Martelly of Haiti recently met to discuss the importance of strong legal frameworks for disaster risk reduction and disaster response.

In a meeting with Haiti President Martelly on 14 March 2012, IFRC President Tadateru Konoé and IFRC Secretary-General Bekele Geleta stressed the need for legal preparedness to disasters. In particular, they noted the importance of adopting legislative measures to facilitate and regulate international disaster response operations, and the strengthening of legislation pursuant to disaster risk reduction, in disaster-prone countries, such as Haiti.
