Between 2017 to 2018, the Irish Red Cross and the Centre for Criminal Justice and Human Rights at the School of Law, University College Cork collaborated on the International Disaster Law Project. As part of the Project, two international disaster law expert workshops were held, the first in Dublin in May 2017 and the second in Cork in June 2017. The Project also involved the production of six Information Sheets about specific topics international disaster law, such as children’s rights in disasters and gender-based violence in disasters. More recently, the Irish Red Cross and University College Cork have begun collaborating on a project focused on integrating climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction in Ireland.
IFRC and the University of College Cork have entered into a partnership agreement to jointly support the work of Dr Tommaso Natoli, who was awarded a MSCA CAROLINE Fellowship to conduct research into the application of the Sendai Framework and the Paris Agreement in national/sub-national legislation and policy, and to develop evidence-based guidance and tools aimed at the adoption and implementation of innovative climate-smart DRM laws that protect the most vulnerable. As part of the fellowship, Dr Natoli has prepared several publications including a Literature Review on Aligning Climate Change Adaptation (CCA) and Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), research on climate and disaster risk governance in the Philippines, the Pacific Islands and Dominica, and a Global Synthesis Report on Law and Policies for Climate Resilience.
