On December 4, the Sierra Leone Red Cross Society and the Sierra Leone Office of National Security hosted a “Legal Preparedness Workshop for Responding to Disaster and Communicable Disaster Emergencies in Sierra Leone.”

This was the second such workshop hosted in the context of the legal preparedness technical assistance project coordinated for the national authorities by the IFRC and the Sierra Leone Red Cross Society.

Participants from various governmental ministries and civil society organizations discussed the most recent draft of the project’s research report on national law, prepared by legal consultant Cosmotina Jarrett. It was agreed that, upon finalization of the report, the task force would shift toward advocacy for the development of new legislation to implement the recommendations of the IDRL Guidelines.

The final research report is scheduled for completion in January 2010.
