The Emory International Law Review, a legal journal associated with Emory University in the United States, has published its most recent issue, featuring a collection of papers presented at its 2011 symposium entitled: “A Worldwide Response: An Examination of International Law Frameworks in the Aftermath of Natural Disasters.” Attended by academics and practitioners in the field of disaster relief and law, this symposium focussed on the definition of natural disasters, the absence of an international framework for disaster response, and common legal issues that arise in the context of disasters.
Elyse Mosquini, Senior Disaster Law Officer at the IFRC, presented a paper entitled: “Are Lawyers Unsung Disaster Heroes?: The Importance of Well-Prepared Domestic Legal and Regulatory Frameworks for Effective Disaster Response”, which emphasises the importance of domestic regulatory frameworks for effective disaster response and outlines recent developments in international disaster response law.
