In July, representatives of the Namibian Red Cross and the Federation’s Africa IDRL Delegate met with Namibian officials in Windhoek to plan a new technical assistance project to help the government to assess its preparedness for international disaster assistance.

This project will draw on the IDRL Guidelines and experiences in other disaster-prone countries to assist Namibian authorities to gauge whether existing laws and procedures are optimal for resolving the most common problem operational problems.

The Deputy Director of the Emergency Management Unit of the Office of the Prime Minister of the Directorate for Disaster Risk Management, Mr. Gabriel Kangowa, was appointed by the Government to chair the IDRL project. Key humanitarian stakeholders in Namibia were also consulted and introduced to the project’s aims.

It is expected that the project will be formally launched upon the signature of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Namibia Red Cross Society, the Federation and the Government of Namibia in the upcoming weeks.
