Andean jurists debate disaster law and rights in an era of climate change

On December 3, a conference of lawyers, academics and civil society representatives from Andean countries gathered in Lima to discuss issues related to human rights and the environment. This 9th “Andean Regional Course on Human Rights” was hosted by the Andean Commission of Jurists, San Martin de Porres University and the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung Foundation.

Among the themes addressed by the conference was how international law addresses vulnerabilities of populations to environmental disasters. In this context, IDRL Americas Delegate Isabelle Granger was asked to present the IDRL Guidelines and to open discussions on how the law can help to ensure rights in disaster settings.

In the context of this Course the participants are asked to present working papers on the themes addressed by the conference; the theme of law and legal issues in the management of natural disasters is one of the themes available to the participants. Papers accepted as part of the Disaster Law Working Paper Series will be “published” on the IFRC’s website.
