The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), the American Society of International Law Disaster Law Interest Group (ASIL DLIG), the Jean Monnet Module on “International and EU Law” at Roma Tre University and the International Disaster Law Project (IDL) of the Universities of Bologna, Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna, Roma Tre and Uninettuno are extremely pleased to announce the winner of the Second Annual International and Comparative Disaster Law Essay Contest!
We offer our sincere congratulations to Ms. Miki Ishimori of the Department of Law and Criminology at Aberystwyth University in Japan! Ms. Ishimori’s essay addresses the ‘Right to housing after Fukushima nuclear disaster: through a lens of international human rights perspective’, which has now been published as a “Working Paper” of the IFRC’s Disaster Law Programme. Ms. Ishimori has also won a monetary prize of 500 Euros, and a free annual membership with the American Society of International Law.
Of honourable mention the paper of Ms. Yung-hua Kuo on ‘Implementing International Laws for Internally Displaced Persons in Situation of Natural Disasters’ has also been published as a “Working Paper” of the IFRC’s Disaster Law Programme. Ms. Yung-hua Kuo is a PhD Candidate at the University of Washington School of Law.
This second annual Essay Contest, held in 2017, drew submissions from 30 students globally. The IFRC wishes to extend it’s thanks to the five judges who carefully graded the essay, including:
-Dr. Katja Samuel, Director, Global Security and Disaster Management Limited. Dr. Samuel is a former Associate Professor in Global Security and Disaster Law, and Disaster Management Programme Director at the University of Reading School of Law in the UK.
-Dr. Kirsten Bookmiller, Professor, Department of Government and Political Affairs, and Director, Global Partnerships Initiative, Centre For Disaster Research and Education (CDRE) at Millersville University of Pennsylvania, USA.
-Mr. Arnold Pronto, Principal Legal Officer, Codification Division, Office of Legal Affairs, United Nations.
-Dr. Giulio Bartolini, Associate Professor of International Law at Roma Tre University, Italy, and manager of the Jean Monnet Module on “International and European Disaster Law”, funded by the EU Commission.
-Mrs. Isabelle Granger, Legislative Advocacy Coordinator at the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. In this capacity she also directs and manages the Disaster Law Programme of the IFRC.
