The Gambia Red Cross Society, with support from IFRC Disaster law, commissioned a report, International Disaster Response Law (IDRL) in The Gambia, in 2016. The report analyses the existing legal and policy frameworks for disaster management and response in The Gambia, focusing on the facilitation and regulation of international disaster assistance. The report also provides an assessment of strengths and gaps and provides recommendations for strengthening legal preparedness for disasters in The Gambia.
In 2019, Gambia Red Cross Society, ECOWAS and IFRC conducted a national workshop, Localization of Aid for an Effective Disaster Management, aimed at enhancing awareness among national authorities on the tools available to capacitate national actors in legal preparedness in disaster management. As an outcome of the workshop, a roadmap was developed to guide the next steps, particularly the need to review the Disaster Risk Management Bill with the support of the Red Cross.
In 2024, representatives from Gambia Red Cross Society took part in a Disaster Risk Reduction Learning Retreat with sessions focused on the role of DRR and Law, as well as the understanding of the auxiliary role of National Societies. In addition, the sessions provided the opportunity to engage national societies on their auxiliary role to enhance DRM and response capacities.
