In 2014, at the request of the Department of Risk and Disaster Management, IFRC Disaster Law and Seychelles Red Cross Society provided technical review of Seychelles' Draft Disaster Management and Risk Reduction Bill. The Bill includes references to key elements of International Disaster Response Law, disaster risk reduction and protection, gender and inclusion.
To support the process of the approval of the Bill, IFRC Disaster Law worked with Seychelles Red Cross Society to host a National Disaster Law Workshop, to share the proposed amendments to the draft Bill with government stakeholders and parliamentarians. The workshop sought to enhance the auxiliary role of Seychelles Red Cross Society in the provision of technical support on disaster law themes and legislative drafting processes. Seychelles Red Cross Society continues to engage with the Department of Risk and Disaster Management in finalising the Bill.
As part of the ongoing mapping of Disaster Risk Management (DRM) frameworks and auxiliary role statuses of African national societies, IFRC Disaster Law completed an auxiliary role and DRM mapping in Seychelles in 2022. The purpose of the auxiliary role mapping exercise is to clearly articulate the auxiliary role of the National Society in the country by identifying, analysing, and consolidating the different roles and responsibilities given to the National Society through national legislation and policies as well as bilateral/multilateral agreements. The DRM mapping aims to identify and analyse the legal and policy arrangements for DRM across the country broadly. Collectively, these mappings aim to provide an analysis to support the National Society’s advocacy efforts with respect to reviews for both their constituting laws and other laws reflecting the auxiliary status of the national society; as well as a review of national DRM laws to include best practices.
