Iraq

The Iraqi Red Crescent Society (IRCS) holds a well-established and formally recognized auxiliary role to Iraqi public authorities and plays a leading role in several national coordination platforms dedicated to disaster and crisis management. Following sustained engagement with IFRC's Disaster Law Programme, IRCS has expressed strong interest in serving as a MENA case study showcasing an advanced model of auxiliary role recognition — and has committed to working with IFRC on a comprehensive mapping of the legislative, regulatory, and policy frameworks governing disaster risk management in Iraq. This is particularly significant given Iraq's acute vulnerability to the impacts of climate change, including extreme heat, droughts, flooding, and desertification, which continue to pose serious threats to lives and livelihoods across the country.
